What to do:
Bergen, on Norway’s southwestern coastline, with a population of just over 280,000 is Norway’s second largest city with Oslo being number one. Surrounded by seven mountains and the gateway to this country’s fjords, Bergen is a picturesque delight. Founded in 1070 by King Olav Kyrre, the original name of this city is Bjørgvin, meaning “the green meadow among the mountains”. Bergen port is Norway’s busiest port cultivating a hub for shipping and cruise ships, considered the gateway to the fjords. Here’s a list of things to do while there:
- Tour the Bryggen, the oldest neighborhood of Bergen, which houses colorful wooden structures along the old Hanseatic wharf.
- Visit the Hanseatic Museum depicting the life of the Hanseatic merchants which is considered a UNESCO world heritage site.
- Take a funicular cable car ride to the top of Mt. Floyen or Mt. Ulriken for views of the city, fjords and surrounding bodies of water. Many hiking trails await once there.
- Check out the Bergen Fish Market where not only will you see the daily indigenous fresh fish and seafood but a wide array of other fruits, vegetables and other homemade delights. This lively market was started in the 1200’s.
- Go see the Bergen Aquarium, a great family attraction too!
- Many small historic museums and art galleries are peppered throughout this city as well.
- Take a Fjord cruise! Here are a couple of links for more info even though several exist: Hurtigruten cruises and Fjord Travel Norway.
